Why Do We Wait To Get Started?

Why Do We Wait To Get Started?

My new year resolutions start today.

So often as humans we make excuses waiting for the perfect time to go after our dreams and goals. I’m no different. I am an absolute pro at procrastinating. Whether it’s lacing up my running shoes and getting out for a run, choosing to eat something healthy, or just getting things done in my life that I know need to get done, my to-do list is essentially an endless supply of distractions from accomplishing the things I want to.

This year New Year’s Day falls right in the middle of Mercury Retrograde, a wonderful phenomenon that likes to throw communications and life in general into a blender. Reading that got me thinking about how much our lives are defined by what other people have determined for us… A 9-to-5 job schedule. The amount of sleep we are supposed to have. Changing of the clocks. The calendar itself. How did these things become standards? If I’m being honest, even if I read the real reasons behind them, I’d still be skeptical about each and every one of them.

This year (er…um…next?) I’m not waiting for the ball to drop to get started on the things I want to accomplish. I don’t want to wait. The older I get the more things I wish I would have done sooner. Life is passing by and I don’t want to wait for the stars to align (or the planets to act weird), or for some schedule that a random person from centuries ago created to get started. So I’m starting my “New Year’s” resolutions today. Here are some of the things I want to accomplish in the next year.

If you have a list of resolutions, find me on social media @nickengvall and share it with me.

Spend More Time With Animals

I haven’t figured out how this will be accomplished but I know that the more time I have in nature or around animals, the better I feel. Hence the reason for my superpower wish.

Create Daily Tasks To Get My Sh!t Done

I’ve been working on this already and look forward to sharing how I do it in the near future.

Overcome My Imposter Syndrome

I’ve been lucky to have a great career and some incredible experiences but at the end of the day, the voice in my head talks me out of doing things more often than it talks me into them.

Write 365 Blog Posts On This Blog

This is something I have always wanted to do and even tried in 2020 before the pandemic slammed the brakes on life. This year I am going to do it. No specific topics, just old-school free-flowing things that are on my mind.

Be More Intentional About What I Eat

I’ve had glimpses of greatness when it comes to eating right, but the past few years have been more Taco Bell than even I am willing to make excuses for.

Build Something From Scratch

Oh, you will see…this one will be fun.

Run 500 Miles

Another 2020 goal that got pushed to the back of the closet. I’ve got a fresh pair of PUMA’s to help me get started and even participated in the Run To Feed The Hungry as a warm-up.

Enter My Car In A Car Show

As it sits now, this will have to come later in the year 🙃

Start A Business

If you know me well, you know I can’t turn off the idea machine that is my mind.  More details to come…

Experience Something Unexpectedly New

If variety is the spice of life, spontaneity must be the water in that meal, right? More unplanned joy, please.

Learn A New Language

I would like to learn Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese, among others. I’ll write about it when I get started.

Watching More Sunrises And Sunsets

This is one of my permanent resolutions, no explanation needed.

Write A Book

I just need to decide which idea to start on…if you’re in the Discord, you can even help.

Read More Books

Do you count audiobooks as books? Asking for a friend.

Let Go Of Things

Yes, sneakers included. More to come. Soon.

Move Closer To The Ocean

Obviously…
